My Very Own Award Show

Due to a number of factors - the economy, the real estate market, and my unwillingness to take a second job - my commute to and from work right now is pretty close to an hour and a half each way from Queens to Harlem, meaning I have about 3 hours a day of time to kill from door to door. And like I said in an interview once before, I always come prepared on public transportation. Having done a fair amount of reading, listening and playing over the past few months, I figured I'd have a little award ceremony here for the stuff I've really enjoyed. I'll make this a non-video games entry because I spend enough time on my other posts blathering on about those already.

So without further ado, I give you:

(a.k.a. "the Q43 to the F to the D, with a 20 minute walk thereabout-ies")

And The Winner Is...

I've been a fan of This American Life for some time, and maybe I'd heard of this podcast before, but I never knew it was as crazy cool as it is. From expansive topics such as morality and limits of the human, brain and body, to shorts on how to keep Alzheimer's patients in a nursing home from running away (spoiler alert: a fake bus stop) this podcast never ceases to touch that awesome spot in my brain that makes me start to see the world in a whole new light.

Runner Up:
My Brother, My Brother and Me -

Hilarious podcast featuring one of my favorite video game bloggers Justin McElroy - but wait! The podcast is actually not about gaming at all. It's an "advice show for the modern era." And it's truly truly hilarious.

And The Winner Is...

Gosh, I don't even know where to begin. Have you been reading a book, and a certain paragraph or section, or even a line of dialog or a character description just blows your mind? And it's not even in a "holy shit, Harry Potter just magicked the F out of that situation!" sort of way - which, you know I'm also a big fan of - but more of a "holy shit, this author's use of pathos...just magicked the F out of my situation!" (It should be noted here that despite how well read I'm slowly becoming, I admittedly still have very few ways to describe the world around me)

The bottom line is it's an amazing novel, and I'm only halfway through it! (Have a problem with that? Make your own daily commute-related-awards-based blog post!)

Runner Up:

Surely you've heard of him. If not, you're in for a treat! Check out The Tipping Point, Outliers, Blink, or any number of articles he's written for The New Yorker .

And The Winner Is...

I saw this dude in concert a few months ago (a friend plays in his band) and I was pretty impressed. During the concert he told everyone his album was available for free online so long as you're willing to recommend it to someone else, which I totally was! I downloaded and have since become a big fan of his work. And here I am promoting it again. Word of mouth marketing at work people!

I'd describe his music as "mostly guitary, sometimes drummy, with lot of man-singing", but as I said before I'm terrible at descriptions, so just click on the above link and listen for a few minutes to tracks on the site to see if it's up your alley

Runner Up:
Remember these guys? A friend posted it on Google Buzz (hey guys, it works!) and the next thing I knew I was downloading their songs. It was a new discovery for me since I had really only ever heard 2 or 3 of their songs in my life. Any maybe, just maybe, if I don't hear the same one song over and over and over again for an entire summer until hearing the few notes start to turn my stomach (fake cough, "Lovefool," fake cough), I might go on to enjoy even more of their music.

And the winner is...

Because crossword puzzles are lame, and make me feel stupid. Eat a dick, crosswords!

Runner Up:
Truth be told I rarely play these. But it's another chance to give crossword puzzles the finger. Hey crosswords, what's a 3 letter word for a crappy, boring word puzzle that's often frustrating and esoteric? Give up? It's: Y-O-U!

Let's have a round of applause* for all the winners!

Well there you have it. I figured if I was going to consume this wonderful artistry on a regular basis, I might as well give back to the world by calling attention them in a brief and somewhat entertaining blog post. You're welcome, universe!

Currently Playing - Couldn't resist mentioning games entirely! Dragon Quest IX and - thanks to a special discount from BestBuy - Picross 3D for the DS are on their way to me as we speak.

*actually this time next year I fully intend to be living much closer to my job/the city. Because clearly by then I'll have consumed ALL THERE IS TO CONSUME in my daily commuting.
*or "clicking of likes", which I guess is the internet equivalent.

You MUST listen to the Tank Riot podcast! It should be at least a nominee for your awards next year!
